This week’s Saturday Shorty takes us straight back to the glory days of Kenner’s The Real Ghostbusters as Timmer tackles one of the wildest groups of figures in the entire vintage toy line: the legendary Haunted Humans.
These weren’t ordinary action figures. At first glance they looked like everyday people—a grandmother, construction worker, mailman, police officer, football player and sanitation worker—but activate their gimmicks and suddenly something absolutely monstrous was hiding underneath!

The Real Ghostbusters Haunted Humans Were Pure 1980s Toy Madness
Few toy lines captured the imagination of kids quite like The Real Ghostbusters. Kenner took the humor, monsters and supernatural insanity of the animated series and transformed it into one of the most memorable action-figure lines of the late 1980s.
The Haunted Humans concept was particularly creative because the monster wasn’t standing next to the figure—the monster was hidden inside the human!
The complete lineup included:
- Granny Gross
- Mail Fraud
- Terror Trash
- Hard Hat Horror
- Tombstone Tackle
- X-Cop
Every figure featured its own bizarre transformation gimmick. Faces opened, bodies transformed and grotesque creatures emerged from places no unsuspecting Ghostbuster—or kid opening one on Christmas morning—would expect.
Which Haunted Human Had the Best Transformation?
That’s where the argument gets interesting.
Do you rank them according to character design? The transformation mechanism? How creepy the hidden ghost looks? Nostalgia? Play value? Or simply which figure looked the coolest battling Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore?
Collectors have been debating favorites from classic toy lines for decades, and the Haunted Humans offer six very different designs to choose from.
Tombstone Tackle brings football-themed monster mayhem. Granny Gross turns an innocent-looking grandmother into something considerably less friendly. Mail Fraud makes receiving the mail terrifying, while Terror Trash, Hard Hat Horror and X-Cop each bring their own wonderfully bizarre Kenner transformation gimmicks.
But only one can claim the top spot.
